Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan won a gold medal in the men's cycling road race on July 28, outsprinting Colombian Rigoberto Uran, who took silver.

The pair surged clear from a breakaway group with around 10 kilometres to go and Vinokourov, who was the silver medallist in Sydney 12 years ago, held on to win it.

Alexander Kristoff of Norway won a bunch sprint to win the bronze medal.
